CHAPTER FIVE
Carl pulled up into the abandoned car park and switched off the engine. He planned to get rid of both weapons at different parts of the canal, so if they were found by police they stood less chance of being connected. He had tried his best to rid both items of any fingerprints or DNA evidence but even he knew that he could have missed something. Even the most, minute incriminating spec could put them both behind bars for life. The weapons were wrapped separately in carrier bags and as Carl picked them up and placed them on his lap he paused, “This is Carl, this is it,” He muttered, trying to give himself the confidence he so desperately needed. He stepped out of the car and surveyed the car park once more. Other than the sound of bird song the coast was clear. “Let’s get this over with,” he said to himself as he closed the car door behind him. He strode towards the canal’s edge and looked around him. With no one around, he took the bag containing the gun and launched it into the middle of the water. The sound of the splash was louder than expected. He watched carefully as the bag disappeared out of sight. He walked further along the canal, looking around with each step. He bent down and located a heavy, misshapen rock to weigh down the knife. He placed it inside the bag and tied the handles before throwing it in.
“Hey what are you doing?” A voice shouted from the other side of the canal. Carl looked up and spotted a woman in her forties, wearing a forest green, hunting jacket. Her Yorkshire terrier yapped frantically in his direction. “I’m going to report you to the police,” She said as she made direct eye contact with Carl. Carl turned and started sprinting back towards his car. His heart pumped faster and faster as he ran. He knew he had to make it back to the car quickly, so the woman couldn’t take down his registration number. He reached the car park and turned around. He could see the woman still stood in the same spot, looking in his direction. He opened his car door, jumped in and quickly sped away. Once clear he breathed a sigh of relief. The dog walker appearing out of nowhere was definitely a red flag. He had to be more careful, one slip up and it could all be over. He looked down at the black bin liner that contained the clothes Rebecca had worn the night before. Carl needed to drop them outside the nearest charity shop and fast!

Rebecca sat in her car outside the station waiting for Amy to arrive. She sent a text message to Carl, just as a light rain shower started to beat down on her windscreen.
“Is it done? xxx.” She texted, waiting with baited breath for an answer. She hated the fact that Carl was now involved in what she considered to be ‘her’ mess but it was too late to turn back the clock now.
